LAW AND ORDER
The University of Illinois at Springfield Center for
State Policy and Leadership marks Constitution Day with a forum,
“Politics, the Constitution, and Supreme Court Appoint-ments.”
The keynote speaker, Professor Martin Redish of the Northwestern University
School of Law, will be joined by distinguished panelists, including U.S.
District Judge Jeanne Scott and Professor Pinky Wassenberg, interim dean of
the College of Public Affairs and Administration. The Constitution
Day forum, free and open to the public, starts at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept.
19, in Brookens Auditorium, on the UIS Campus.
GIRLS IN CHARGE
Several local eighth-grade girls have organized a
public fun run/walk at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at Washington Park to raise
money for the park’s playground-renovation project. The two-mile
course begins at the playground entrance. Registration forms are available
at the Springfield Park Foundation Web site,
www.springfieldparksfoundation.org. The cost is $20 ($10 for children 12

addition to Fetter, the students who organized the event are Carrie
McMenamin, Lindsay Nation, Julie Schulenburg, Catlin Sutcliffe, Katie Burg,
and Katherine Dunn. The playground will be dedicated at 12:30 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 15. The cost of the $450,000 renovation came from private
donations; about $50,000 is still needed to complete the project.
HIKE THE EMIQUON PRESERVE
Register by Monday, Sept. 19, to hike the levee at the
Emiquon Preserve, near Havana. The Nature Conservancy is sponsoring the
event on Saturday, Sept. 24, to showcase its restoration work at the
7,000-acre wetland area. Registration is $10 per adult ($5 for children 12

The Emiquon Preserve, considered a linchpin of the Nature
Conservancy’s efforts to rehabilitate the Illinois River, is located
in Fulton County on Routes 97/78, approximately four miles north of U.S.
Highway 136 near Dickson Mounds Museum in Lewistown.
