Heller Armbruster, the fourth-generation owner of Armbruster Manufacturing Company since 2005, stands by an original tent sewing machine from the 1800s. The 149-year-old manufacturing business in Chatham is closing its doors in June and the property has been sold to the central Illinois Roto-Rooter franchisee.

PRESERVE THE HISTORY

I would like to give a big thank you to David Blanchette and Illinois Times for the wonderful and comprehensive coverage of the history and upcoming closure of Armbruster Manufacturing ("The end of an era," March 14). All three articles were interesting and informative. I sincerely hope that there is a local history museum that could take the photos, stories, samples and possibly some machinery to have a display of this Springfield icon.

STILL IN USE

This is very sad. My grandfather worked at Armbruster about 40 years or more and they still use many of the tents he made for the fair every year.

CLASS ACT

I rented tents from Bernie (Armbruster) for all the hot rod, truck and street machines events at the fairgrounds. Bernie always stopped by during the event to make sure everything was good.

FOCUS ON PATIENTS

It's disgusting that they got rid of it in the first place ("Memorial Health to bring back valet parking," Feb. 29). Memorial's administration has shown time and time again that they care about profit and the bottom line, not patient care. Besides firing these valuable individuals, they also fired leaders in mental health and brilliant ethicists – all needed by the community for advocacy, change and patient-centered care.

BAIT AND SWITCH

It's just a bait-and-switch strategy the Democrats are known for ("Eliminating grocery tax a popular proposal," March 14). We'll eliminate the taxes on groceries to help the people of Illinois – sounds great. They'll make up for the loss by raising taxes elsewhere.

This 46-page book, together with documents and papers from HUC's first three years, are deposited in the Springfield Lincoln Library's Sangamon Valley Collection. Copies of the book may be requested by emailing [email protected].
