A former Springfield man whose criminal history was detailed in a 2005 Illinois Times story has been arrested in Missouri.

Police in Monroe City, about 25 miles west of Hannibal, arrested Michael Redpath on Thursday on suspicion of failure to register as a sex offender and unlawfully being within 500 feet of a park with a playground.

In 2005, Redpath, 56, pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a girl who was younger than 13 when he molested her. The guilty plea came after several women and children accused Redpath of sexual assault or abuse over a period of years. Redpath received a three-year sentence. Redpath comes from a prominent local family. His father was a high-ranking Springfield police official and a brother is a city alderman.

Redpath remains registered as a sex offender in Illinois, where an Illinois State Police website shows his residence as an Athens address. However,  Monroe City police said in a press release that they determined that Redpath has been living in Missouri. Police reported that Redpath remained in custody on Monday, with a cash-only bail set at $50,000.
