This year's primary campaign demonstrates again how much the Illinois governor's race has become a battle of big money. The multibillionaire Ken Griffin is heavily backing Republican governor candidate Richard Irvin, while Richard Uihlein, apparently only a multimillionaire, is supporting the other Republican front-runner, Darren Bailey. JB Pritzker, the billionaire Democratic governor, is not only self-funding his own campaign, he's working through the Democratic Governor's Association to spend millions for ads to boost Darren Bailey, the GOP candidate Pritzker thinks would be easier to beat. Campaign spending reform won't come anytime soon from legislatures or the courts. The best we can hope for now is a smart electorate that can see through expensive and false advertising, as well as more and better political reporting that will help voters wise up. –Fletcher Farrar, editor
