The armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France, took effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Armistice Day is now a national holiday in many Allied nations; in the United States it is celebrated as Veterans Day. The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs is cosponsoring the 10th annual Veterans Day Parade to commemorate the historic day, and to honor and recognize Illinois veterans who served both in times of war and in times of peace. The parade will kick off at 11th and Capitol streets, led by Grand Marshal Leon Carter, a 95-year-old veteran of the Marine Corps. Then, the marching bands, military veterans and active members, representatives of veteran organizations and floats decked in patriotic splendor will make a grand procession west on Capitol Avenue to the Illinois State Capitol. It should be a sight to see, so grab your American flag, line the streets and join in the cheers as they pass in front of the crowds. Afterwards, both parade participants and the public alike are invited to stop in the American Legion Post 809 at 1800 E. Capitol Avenue, for a free program and lunch, with entertainment by the Springfield Municipal Band.
