Annual event celebrates 25th year with giveaways, contest

This weekend is a milestone for the Illinois Product Expo. The Expo, a family-friendly event showcasing Illinois food and agriculture industries, is marking its 25th year. State officials say the event is going to be as big as ever, too, with more than 70 vendors offering samples and products including cheese, baked goods, sauces, meats, salsa, craft beer and more. So this weekend might be the perfect time to explore the state by sampling its various products, stocking up on some longtime favorites and relaxing in the Illinois Wine Garden. More than 5,000 shoppers attended last year. This year, the first 25 attendees will receive a special commemorative cup and the first 250 people buying the popular apple cider slushies will each get one, too. Plus, shoppers once again can take advantage of the "$5 for 5" promotion in which $5 in Expo dollars are given with the purchase of five products. And new this year, the event's vendors and patrons are invited to vote in various categories including best booth design, people's choice product, best salsa, best condiment and best sweet. Patrons will be eligible for prizes and vendors will win plaques. Admission is $5 per person with children 10 and younger admitted free of charge.
