Attention young virtuosos

Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony offers Starter Strings

Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony (SVYS) is gearing up for an exceptional orchestra season and is looking for new additions to the ensemble.

Established in 1976, Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony has provided orchestral experiences and education to Springfield and surrounding communities for 40 years. SVYS is home to six youth orchestras for musicians in grades 3-12, including a beginning string orchestra and an advanced symphonic orchestra. SVYS is not only for string musicians: advanced musicians who play string, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments comprise the premiere youth ensemble, the Youth Symphony.

Children with an interest in playing violin, viola, cello or bass, but who have no previous music instruction, are encouraged to sign up for a Starter Strings class. This season, SVYS is pleased to offer Starter Strings after-school classes at five area elementary schools, as well as two new evening classes. One evening class is for third- and fourth-grade students, and one is for fifth-grade and older students.

Information on ensembles, as well as audition and registration information, is posted at www.svys.org. If you have questions, you can also contact the office at 217-753-8000 or [email protected].
