EAT BRUNCH, HELP A CRITTER
Animal lovers who support efforts to enforce the state’s humane laws are invited to a brunch at Knights of Columbus Council 346 on Sunday, Nov. 14.
Proceeds from the brunch, which will be served between 8 a.m. and noon at the K of C facility at 2200 Meadowlark Rd., support Illinois Humane, a not-for-profit group that investigates allegations of cruelty to animals.

PROFILE IN COURAGE
Brian L. Graves of the Springfield Police Department was one of 18 officers from across the state honored at the Executive Mansion on Monday for acts of heroism.
The story behind each award amounts to a profile in courage. For instance, a pair of Chicago cops received awards for disarming two gunmen who fired rounds into a school playground filled with children; a Peru officer was honored for diving into the Illinois River in an attempt to save three people drowning inside a car.
For Graves, the award is the latest of many honors he’s received for rescuing three people, including a small child, from a burning house on North Douglas Avenue in January 2003.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich was on hand to award a Law Enforcement Medal of Honor
to each of the officers.
