On Friday, Feb. 13, at 4 p.m., Cub Scout Pack 202 visited the Illinois Times office, located at 1240. S. Sixth Street, for a field trip. The boys were well-behaved throughout the presentation, and all Scouts did a wonderful job listening to the presenter, asking thoughtful questions and exercising journalism skills. At the end of the program several students remarked that they may be interested in a future career in journalism.

Upon arrival, the Scouts toured the Illinois Times newsroom where they learned how newspapers are produced and met staff members. After the tour, the program moved to the conference room as the boys participated in activities designed to hone their investigative and reporting skills. The Scouts split into pairs and conducted partner interviews for several minutes. When the allotted time was up, each Scout introduced their partner to the group by sharing new facts they learned during the interview. The boys then tested their reading comprehension skills and learned about facts versus opinion by reading and answering questions about a short news article. The visit concluded with a group photograph, taken by Illinois Times staff writer and photographer, Patrick Yeagle.
