A while back I lamented Illinois’ failure to set up its own exchange at which citizens without health insurance might learn about and apply for affordable coverage. Today, Business Insider provides a revealing chart on how the different states are doing signing up people for Obamacare. Using data from the Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Census Bureau, the magazine ranked states (except Massachusetts) according to the share of the state population which has been able to select a plan through an Affordable Care Act exchange through Nov. 30, 2013.
The runaway winner is Vermont, followed by Kentucky – two states that made an early commitment to setting up their own exchange. In fact, nine of the 13 states that are leading in signups are running their own exchanges.
And Illinois? Ranked 32nd.
