It’s easy to overlook the beauty of the world around you, but Dave Heinzel of Springfield makes it much easier to appreciate. Heinzel, a multi-media artist, recorded a captivating time lapse video of downtown Springfield from January 2013 to January 2014. In just under six minutes of video he captures sunrises, sunsets, storms, blizzards, people, cars and downtown landmarks. Titled “A Year of Light,” the footage was mostly shot from inside Heinzel’s former apartment downtown using a camera mounted on a custom gearbox made of LEGO. The footage is set to a sweeping soundtrack that compliments the character of an environment many of us fail to notice. Heinzel says he started the project because he was fascinated by the light and shadows moving across the inside of his apartment, but he soon turned his lens to the world outside. “I like finding new ways to look at things we see all the time,” he said. “I believe there’s an inherent beauty in all things, but sometimes it takes a different perspective to discover it. There are amazing things that you discover when slowing down or speeding up time.” Heinzel has created more than 100 artistic videos, which are shared publicly on his Youtube channel.
