More afterthoughts inspired by my Sept. 24 column on
immigration, “
Trumped-up
charges
:”

One way to get rid of foreigners in our midst is
to help them become Americans. Broadly speaking, that was the policy  that made great the America that Trump wants
to restore. Yet Illinois’ newest
Congressman, Darin LaHood,
voted against measures to allow undocumented
immigrants to take fuller part in American life by obtaining drivers licenses
or going to school. The only reason to regret the loss of Aaron Schock from
the state’s congressional delegation was his support not only for a path to
legal immigrant status but citizenship. True, he was repeating what
Caterpillar, the biggest employer in his district, was whispering his ear, but
we’re better off having Caterpillar doing the Republicans’ thinking than leave
it to them, on this issue at least.
