We who have had long experience with police, and have seen their good sides and bad, having watched them overreact and underreact, can understand those who want to “defund” the police and start all over again. It would be good to have social workers respond to domestic violence calls and drug rehab specialists to call for somebody high being loud. We could start a new agency that wants to hire minorities and that minorities want to join, one with a union that won’t defend despicable behavior, one without rogues who kill innocents. Just tell me who to call when a prostitute is cruising my sidewalk, or when a homeless drunk is sleeping in the park, or when loud cars are treating Sixth Street like a drag strip.
