New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof noted this week that President Joe Biden has been talking increasingly tougher to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the humanitarian toll in Gaza caused by Israel's war tactics. But Netanyahu continues to ignore the White House. Kristof quoted Israeli defense minister Moshe Dayan, speaking to an American in 1967. "Our American friends offer us money, arms and advice," he said. "We take the money, we take the arms, and we decline the advice." But what if America told Israel it would get aid only if it took the advice? "Then we would have to take the advice, too," Dayan replied. – Fletcher Farrar, editor
