Coup in battle over ballot access

Gill gets preliminary injunction against elections board

A candidate for the U.S. House seat covering Springfield scored a coup today as he attempts to get the state's signature requirements for ballot access struck down.

U.S. District Judge Sue Myerscough today granted David Gill of Bloomington a preliminary injunction against the Illinois State Board of Elections, preventing the board from enforcing the signature requirement to remove Gill from the ballot in the race for the 13th Congressional District. Gill hopes to take on Rep. Rodney Davis, a Republican who bested Gill for the seat in 2012.

Gill filed his lawsuit Aug. 1, asking the court to prevent his name from being removed from the ballot after the elections board decided Gill didn't submit enough signatures to satisfy the requirement.

After a hearing in Springfield yesterday, Myerscough granted Gill's motion for a preliminary injunction today. Read the decision here.
