Wanted: Experienced Mountain Bikers.

Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site near Petersburg wants you to help open Central Illinois’ newest mountain bike trail — billed by the organization as scenic and physically demanding. The 3.8-mile trail was constructed this summer and features steep climbs and descents along a very technical course through the woods.

Less experienced riders don’t have to sit on the sidelines — they can also join in the action on the one-mile looped Cardinal Ridge Trail.

The mountain bike trail’s grand opening begins at 11 a.m. Saturday. Trail maps, water and energy bars will be handed out at the trailhead. Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site is located along Route 97, two miles south of Petersburg and 20 miles northwest of Springfield.
