If the Roughnecks Motorcycle Club was a book, judging it by its cover would be a mistake. These tough-looking bikers in leather are actually all active or retired police officers and public safety personnel. For the past six years, the Springfield chapter of the Roughnecks has been raising money for a good cause. Every June, the Springfield Roughnecks hold a charity ride to benefit St. Jude’s Children Hospital, and on Feb. 19, they turned in a check for $21,455 during the St. Jude Radiothon at WFMB in Springfield. Chapter president Mike Moore, who goes by the nickname Grinder, says public service is a big part of the club’s mission. Many members of the Springfield RMC are parents, Moore says, so St. Jude was a natural choice for a beneficiary. “You can’t really put it into words,” he said, describing why the club holds its fundraisers. “It’s just the peace of mind to know you’re helping families that need assistance to get treatment for their children.” Check out the Springfield RMC online at facebook.com/roughnecks.illinois.
