An
explosion of Springfield songwriters is set to go off at Mojo’s (225
E. Monroe St.) around 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18. Included in Reirer “the
Proprietor” Deloney’s big blast of acoustic guitar wielding
lyricists are Micah Walk, Joe Frew, Josh Reilly, Matt Meinhert, Sarah
Schnieder, Dave Littrell, and Tom Irwin.
The
band Jazz Orgy began exploring alternative ways of self-satisfaction and
discovery during Sunday night jazz jams at Peabody’s Ale House in Osh
Kosh, Wis., their town of origin. After several years of pleasure-packed
nights they’re now taking the show on the road, spreading the joy of
jazz to all who seek it. Your turn is Friday, Feb. 18, at Jazz Central
Station (700 E. Adams St., 789-1530) from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Karma,
the downtown area’s latest nightclub, is holed up in Vinegar Hill
Mall, taking the space where the Funny Bone Comedy Club, Baur’s Opera
House, and other Springfield hangouts once called home. DJs and dancing is
their usual road to nirvana but Friday, Feb. 18, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.,
our local Lost Boys offer live music as another alternative to
enlightenment. May we all shine on, like the moon and the stars and the
sun.
This
is the last time we’re going to say, “This is your last chance
to see the John Wilde Group of Liverpool, England, in a nightclub in
Springfield, Ill., U.S.A.” – unless, of course, they’re
still here next week. After several attempts to leave town, the band has
seemed to contract a local disease that affects the roaming capacities of
inhabitants of our fair city. After this week’s gigs in Curran,
Pleasant Plains, and Springfield, the lads will take the cure and head for
Nashville and a long road trip. We’re going to miss them — if
they ever leave.
Fans
of Elvis Costello, the Band, and British folk-rock would do well to check
out Arthur Dodge and the Horsefeathers, Thursday, Feb. 17, at the
Underground City Tavern (700 E. Adams St., 789-1530). The singer-songwriter
and band hail from Lawrence, Kan., a city long praised as an oasis of
artistic excitement in the mundane Midwest desert. Dodge drives a cab to
support his music habit and has released several well-received albums. His
songs are good and his band superb.
