Utilizing acoustic instruments in a bluegrass-folk-pop-ish style, the five players in ClusterPluck (don’t you just love saying that name?!) bring it on and score high. Chris Rader (vocals, banjo, guitar), Justin Torres (vocals, bass, guitar), Derek Rutter (vocals, mandolin, guitar), Leah Osborne (vocals, washboard, ukulele) and Matt Gadeken (violin, vocals) go deep in the rhythm to present interesting lyrical songs while knocking out killer instrumental runs cloaked in soaring five-part vocals. Up from their home base of St. Louis, the quintet regularly plays standard venues such as Schlafly Bottleworks, Broadway Oyster Bar and Stagger Inn Again. The list of festivals played last year is impressive, including Summer Camp, John Hartford Memorial and Mulberry Mountain Harvest and they’ve shared the stage with everyone from Del McCoury Band to the Whistle Pigs. It’s a traditional set up of familiar instruments, but The Pluck (as friends like to call them) are far from traditional in style and performance, using rock-n-roll swagger to compliment solid acoustic, Americana sounds.
