The Crafted Stag is the people’s choice as best men’s clothing store, but there’s a lot more than just men’s clothing inside the nearly 3-year-old establishment owned by 43-year-old Springfield native Grant Hammer.
There is a full bar. There are three barber’s chairs, two that service walk-ins and another by appointment only. There are leather coaches and a big canoe by some of the couches. There are candles, and colognes and even a small section with some women’s clothing.
So, how does Hammer describe his store in Parkway Pointe?
“I would say it’s like a clubhouse for men,” Hammer said. “We want the place to be one where men – and women – can hang out, and have more of an experience, not just a place to buy stuff.”
Indeed, the store’s website reads “Beer, Barbers, Bros, Clothes” on the homepage.
Hammer, who worked in communications before opening the store, came up with the name in honor of some of the many ski runs he’s had at various mountains across the country. The interior does have kind of an apres ski lodge type of feel to it.
Hammer’s sense of adventure extended to his professional life, when he ditched the 9-to-5 world to take a shot as an entrepreneur. Business, he said, has grown every year.
The clothing is on the higher end side, and it tends toward outdoorsy styles. The store also does a brisk business renting tuxedos and other formal wear.
But it’s not snobby. A sense of humor is expressed in some of the store’s product descriptions, and Hammer wants laughter coming from the bar/barber’s side of the store.
“Can you have a drink getting your hair cut?”, Hammer is asked.
“Oh yeah,” he said. “We encourage it.”
