This week's calendar is packed with holiday happenings for Independence Day and you will not have to look far for fun ways to celebrate. Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site will have activities on July 1-2 and July 5, with period demonstrations and a reading of the Declaration of Independence each day. The Capital City Celebration begins on Saturday, July 2 and runs through July 3 in downtown Springfield where you can enjoy a parade, children's activities and live music. On Monday, July 4, stop by the Elijah Iles House and join Clara Irwin's Strawberry Party to enjoy strawberries and drinks while listening to Peaches and Bacon. Also, on Monday, Chatham-Auburn Memorial VFW Post 4763 will host the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence by local veterans' groups and others at the Chatham Veterans Memorial Square. Afterwards you can join in a lively discussion about the Founding Fathers and the Declaration at the Parchments and Pints event. Of course, there will be plenty of places to catch fireworks displays, such as Rock the Dock at the Lake Springfield Marina, Knight's Action Park's Fireworks Spectacular and the Chatham Jaycee Freedom Fest. Check the calendar listings and the Facebook pages, and then start celebrating.
