The Pillsbury Mills plant has been closed since 2001, but “office hours” are continuing there every Tuesday morning through Sept. 26. Former Pillsbury employees, neighbors, retirees and families are invited to spend some time with site owner Moving Pillsbury Forward in a shaded, indoor sitting area on the south loading dock. It’s all a part of the Pillsbury Reunion Project, an effort to learn about and preserve the history of the north-end plant. Attendees are asked to bring their Pillsbury stories and a cup of coffee. Visitors also can check out artifacts from the plant. The plant opened in 1929 and was employing 1,500 workers by 1950. “The Pillsbury plant had a positive impact on the greater Springfield area that was tremendous and long lasting. A huge part of that was the people involved … the workers and the great productive culture they established,” the project team said in a release. “Certainly, a history worth remembering and recording for future generations.”
