A new novel released last week in paperback is based on the true story of a Portuguese family that settled in Jacksonville in the 1800s. Katherine Vaz, a former Claridge writer-in-residence at Illinois College, will talk about Above the Salt and “the surprising turns in the road while researching this incredible tale of survival, heartache, war, and generosity, with special attention paid to the book-defining discoveries she made during her time as writer-in-residence at IC,” according to the college. The book, released Nov. 7, has been met with good reviews and already been a People Magazine Book of the Week selection and a Goodreads November top pick. The event is free to the public.
