Join former U.S. Senator Adlai Stevenson III on Thursday, June 16, as he discusses modern politics through the multi-generational lens of his family’s political leadership. In additional to serving as a U.S. senator for 11 years, Adlai Stevenson III ran for governor of Illinois twice. His father, Adlai Stevenson II, served as Illinois governor from 1949-1953, was a Democratic nominee for president in 1952 and 1956, and the ambassador to the United Nations during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Great grandfather Adlai Stevenson served as vice president of the United States under President Grover Cleveland from 1893-1897. During his presentation, Stevenson III will share quotes and wisdom from his family’s Black Book, a compilation of stories, sayings and notes jotted down on various menus, napkins, papers, etc., compiled by the elder Stevenson and later passed down to his son and eventually great-grandson. Says Adlai Stevenson III, “The Black Book … reflects the environment within which politics and politicians functioned during an earlier era, and contains comments on the implications of the past for the future.” The free event begins at 6 p.m. with a book signing in the museum’s main plaza, and will move to Union Theatre at 6:30 p.m. for a discussion followed by a question-and-answer session.
