Theatre in the Park closes its summer season with a
tip of the hat to a milestone: the 100th anniversary of Anne of Green
Gables. In the classic tale, a farming family,
Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, adopts an orphan to help in the fields, but
what they got in Anne was more than they bargained for. The jovial
redheaded girl, portrayed by Cassie Poe, captures the family’s heart,
but ruins a few things on the way including Marilla’s treasured
brooch. Kelly Bassett directs the Alice Chadwick production. MaryBeth
Maloney and Don Baily portray Marilla and Matthew, respectively. The
two-weekend run closes out TIP’s summer theater lineup on Aug. 30.

Cracking up
If you don’t see enough of Robert DeNiro, Al
Pacino, or George W. Bush, your best bet is to go see an impersonator.
Mimicking masters, like Frank Caliendo, deliver the best lines from famous
folks without the filler. Caliendo hits the boards this weekend for a
lively stand-up comedy show at Sangamon Auditorium. The MadTV alum, known for his spot-on
impressions, introduced his own television show, Frank TV, on the TBS network last
fall. But Caliendo is no one trick pony, the seasoned jokester sprinkles in
his own characters and anecdotes to accompany his vast repertoire of
impressions.

Green thumb
With farmers’ markets and organic clothing
popping up across the country, it’s time to get on the sustainable
wagon. Food Not Lawns is here to help capital city residents make the
jump to local living. This week, the green group presents a how-to seminar
about local eating and living featuring Hill Street Farm operator Andy
Heck. Heck’s Modesto, Ill.-based farm sets up shop weekly at Old
Capitol Farmer’s Market and hosts a community-supported agriculture
program, a club where members pay a farmer up front for food he or she will
grow throughout the season.

BBQ blues
The wail of the blues, combined with the taste of
barbecue, is sure to stir the soul. This year at the Fifth Annual Old
Capitol Blues and BBQs more than 40 entrants will compete for the title of
best barbecue around. Traditional dishes like ribs, pulled pork, brisket
and more will be served up saucy. Beer, barbecue and the blues will turn
downtown Springfield into barbecue heaven, and when the spirit of the blues
is resurrected, the guitar follows. Calvin Cooke a.k.a. “B.B. King of
gospel steel guitar,” Tarbox Ramblers, and Howard and the White Boys
will rock the music of legends. Local bands will also compete for a chance
to represent the Illinois Central Blues Club in the 2009 Blues foundation
International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn.
