Apple fest
The 26th annual Broom Orchard Apple Festival marks the beginning of
long cool nights and the Illinois harvest. The festival is a family
friendly way to enjoy the pleasures of fall and the comfort of sweet apple
cider. Take a wagon wide ride through Broom Orchard and breathe in the
crisp country air. Feast on caramel apples, fresh-picked apples, pork
sandwiches and more. Broom’s famous cider slush and kettle corn will
also be available. Kids can spend the afternoon riding ponies or finding
their way through a corn and straw maze. Enjoy the slow pace and good food
with a tradition that ushers in the fall.

Afraid to ask
If you’ve ever wanted to ask someone a question,
but fear stopped you in your tracks, you’re not alone. Mark Cryer,
playwright, attempts to create conversation about race in 99 Questions You Wanted to Ask an African-American, but
Were Too Afraid for Fear They’d Break Their Foot Off In Your
A**. The multi-media play was written in
response to a racial slur found on a student’s door at Hobart and
William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y. The subject matter addresses
stereotypes about African-Americans that fuel racism and perceptions of
differences. Cryer uses humor to reveal what we think and what we know
about African-Americans.

Show off your chrome rims and custom-built engines
this weekend at the seventh annual International Route 66 Mother Road
Festival. More than 1,000 classic and vintage cars and trucks from the U.S.
and Canada will be on display in downtown Springfield. The festival will
feature cars by Troy Trepanier, famed custom car builder. An Indianapolis
Motor Speedway Fan Tour interactive display with a side racing simulator,
and a Mobile Dyno Chassis that allows you to test torque and horsepower are
just two of the attractions. There will be plenty of prizes with more than
40 classes of car show awards. Butch Wax & The Hollywood, Kavan, and
The World’s #1 Rock n’ Roll Elvis will light up the hot rod
stage with live music.
