Damselfly poem (written 1942) Â
from the rowboat I leaned in
to look at it; it was clinging
to a reed the eyes were like Â
dumbbells bulging bulbs thatÂ
covered most of each side of Â
the head its long tail (notched Â
like snake grass) was a soft
lavender marked with smokey Â
black its six legs had even hairs Â
like curved sawteeth its transparent Â
wings webbed down the sides then Â
it swiveled its head and flew away
