Under the Dome

Down the street from Lincoln Tower
Under the dome in the seat of power
Heavy are the heads that wear the crowns
Because five billion dollars must be found.

Bipartisan effort come on let’s think
As we face a budget deficit on the brink
Not higher taxes that’s what they are cryin’
To clean up this mess left by George Ryan.

High and low they search day and night
Both sides of the aisle in the budget fight
We know where the money’s at and they do to
They’re going to take it from me and you.

–D. Stoner

Local poets were writing about contemporary events in the Sangamo
Journal as early as the 1830s. People’s Poetry wants you to share your thoughts
on what’s happening in Springfield today–in poetic form. Poems on any subject
will be considered, but ones that deal with issues of local interest are encouraged.
Send yours to poetry editor Lee Gurga, P.O. Box 662, Lincoln, IL 62656, or to
gurga@ccaonline.com with “Bards of
the Sangamo” in the subject line. (Please limit your submissions to poems of
14 lines or less.)
