Enjoy an up-close-and-personal examination of one of the world’s tiniest breeds of birds this weekend at the Sangamon River Audubon Society’s Hummingbird Festival. Hummingbirds, which typically measure no more than 3 to 5 inches in length, derive their name from the humming sound generated by the flapping of their wings, which beat at a speed of approximately 50 beats per minute. Currently, four different species of hummingbirds can be found in Illinois: Ruby-throated, Rufous, Broad-billed and Allen’s. During the festival, Sangamon River Audubon Society members will band and assist with release of the hummingbirds so that the birds’ annual migration patterns may be tracked and studied. Hummingbirds will be available for “adoption” by attendees, and experienced birders will explain how to attract hummingbirds to your garden, as well as how to choose and maintain hummingbird feeders. The Hummingbird Festival is free and open to the public. For more information, visit http://lincolnsnewsalem.com.
