The Sangamon Mass Transit District Board of Trustees packed a lot into this meeting.

First, the managing director shared how local projects are tying into a federal transportation funding roundtable and why a long awaited East Yard improvement is racing the clock on this construction season.

Later, the Operations Committee finally met again and came back with some notable moves:

  • Quicker service changes coming to Route 16 and new service to the Dome.
  • Cancellation of a low ridership school tripper that students appear to have already replaced with other routes.
  • A big milestone: paratransit rides passed six figures for the first time, with fixed route ridership also inching up.
  • Preparations underway for both State Fair shuttles and regular service to the fairgrounds.

The board also backed a technology upgrade to bus audio announcements at the transfer center to better support riders with visual impairments. That led to a deeper conversation about why buses don’t have fixed spots there — touching on breakdowns, detours, and safety tradeoffs that aren’t obvious from the outside.

If you ride SMTD, rely on paratransit, or care about transit accessibility and service planning, this one’s worth a watch.
