The Springfield District 186 Board of Education meeting started with a big win: the Lincoln Magnet and Ball Charter 8th grade girls basketball team brought home the 3A championship and will be honored at the next meeting.
Right after that, the focus shifted to the citywide basketball tournament (Jan. 21–24) — not just games, but cheer sections, choir, band, and drumline turning it into a full student showcase.
Families with students changing schools next year will want to see this: district-wide freshman preview night is set for Jan. 15 (all three high schools, 6–7 p.m.), and middle school preview night is Feb. 5 (for current 5th graders heading to 6th). The board talked about how these nights help families understand school assignments, courses, and activities.
The board also walked through how e-learning days will replace up to five inclement-weather or emergency closure days — what that means for snow days, why it’s better for instruction, and how staff roles are handled.
Finally, there’s an update on the search for the next superintendent: surveys, 18 focus groups, strong student participation, and initial interviews already underway, with the board aiming to choose a new leader in the next month while balancing transparency with personnel confidentiality.
If you live in District 186, have a student in the schools, or just care about how decisions are being made, this one’s worth a watch.
