The Sangamon County Board had one of its rare feel-good moments as members unanimously approved and swore in a new board member — complete with a light-hearted nod to cutting through “tangled bureaucratic nonsense.”
Then public comment turned straight back to tension over the recently approved data center.
Residents:
- Questioned whether the board still holds itself to the same standard of “democracy at its best” when petitions and packed hearings oppose a project.
- Laid out a case for a 6–12 month moratorium on data centers and making them a special use, with stronger zoning, decommissioning rules, and developer-funded impact reviews.
- Spoke from frustration about money vs. livelihoods, calling out long-term effects on farms, health, and neighbors who feel ignored — and pointing to a local lawsuit against the data center developer.
The chair closed public comment, accepted committee reports, and recessed the board until August, but opponents made one thing clear: they’re not dropping the data center fight.
