The Springfield City Council meeting was packed with big decisions and some heated moments:
– Emotional farewells for the police and fire chiefs after nearly three decades of service each.
– A zoning request for a longer dock on Lake Springfield drew strong warnings about changing the rules — yet the council approved the extension unanimously.
– A new 24-unit apartment project for residents with disabilities got enthusiastic support and a green light, with reduced parking requirements to match residents’ needs.
– The council approved $250,000 more for the Growth Alliance, but not before a tense debate about making sure east side neighborhoods get their fair share. After nearly an hour, a $50,000 amendment for targeted development passed unanimously.
– A split vote over political ads on bus benches ended with the mayor breaking the tie — political ads are now out, but commercial ads stay.
