John D. Sorensen, 76, of Springfield, passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at HSHS St. John’s Hospital. He was born on Nov. 12, 1949, in Tupper Lake, New York, the son of Dale Clarence and Dorothy Alida (Lovell) Sorensen. John met the love of his life, Maureen Parry, in 1982, and they were married on Aug. 31, 1985, sharing nearly 41 years of love, laughter, and cherished memories together.
Surviving John are his wife, Maureen Sorensen; two daughters, Hayley Drew and Nicola Sorensen, both of South Yorkshire, England; nine grandchildren, Jack, Sam, Olivia, April, Holly, Jodie, Bella, Ella, and Annie; sister, Sandra Lojewski; two brothers, Donald (Rosemary) Sorensen and Jens (Margi) Sorensen; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by two brothers, Chris and DC Sorensen; brother-in-law, Dick Lojewski; and sister-in-law, Vicky Sorensen.
John proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and National Guard, with assignments across the United States and overseas, including Vietnam and Thailand. He served with unwavering duty, honor, and commitment, and remained deeply proud of his military service throughout his life.
He dedicated more than 30 years of his career as a tool and die maker at Bunn Corporation, where he took great pride in his work and craftsmanship. He had a lifelong passion for flying and fulfilled that dream by earning his pilot’s license. John was endlessly curious and had an eye for discovering hidden treasures, whether it was a unique tool or the perfect yard sale find. He found joy in the thrill of the hunt and loved bringing a new purpose to the things he collected. Those who knew him will remember his resourcefulness, his appreciation for quality craftsmanship, and the excitement he found in life’s simple pleasures.
Above all, John was a devoted family man who deeply cherished his family and friends. He would do anything for anyone and was always ready with a funny story or silly joke, but most of all, John was full of love.
Cremation has been accorded by Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.
