With the autumn season here and winter not far behind, many of us are busily preparing our homes for time indoors due to dark evenings and cooler weather. While we may feel the urge to go all-in on a renovation, budgets and time constraints are realistic impediments to going through with an all-out redo. So why not consider a few easy home improvements that don’t require an entire renovation’s worth of time or money? Read on for some ways that you can achieve an autumn home “glow-up” feeling without blowing your budget or living through a tedious home project.
First of all, sit down with a pen and paper and think about the areas in your home. Which areas bother you? What rooms or underused spaces would you like to spend more time in during the cooler months ahead? Chances are you can easily identify the spaces in your home that could use some TLC, and this could be the best time of year to get to some of those places you’ve been meaning to tackle.
One way to find space in your own home is to simply declutter one area or room that has gotten out of hand (and we all have at least one). Rearranging your items into storage or donating them to someone who can use them not only frees up a lot of physical space, it makes your entire home (and mood) feel lighter and brighter due to the absence of clutter.
While you are decluttering, you might feel the urge to break out a vacuum to get to those dusty corners. Small deep-cleaning projects such as carpet cleaning, washing windows, washing upholstery or even cleaning scuffs on your walls with a magic eraser can make your home feel fresh and new without spending any money. And while you are at it, consider dusting off fan blades and reversing the direction of your ceiling fans for better energy efficiency. Setting fans to spin clockwise in the autumn and winter months gently pushes warm air down without causing a draft.
Next up, think about swapping out your artwork for a more autumnal theme. To keep this inexpensive, move around pieces you already own, put frames around kids’ art, or check out consignment shops or yard sales for new pieces that have an autumnal mood. When you have finished rearranging or reorganizing your art, consider your decor as well. Easy additions such as throw pillows or blankets in a new hue or fabric, like flannel, velvet or corduroy, can give you the cozy vibe you are looking for with a price tag that is much less than a renovation.
Though it requires a little bit more work and measurement, rearranging furniture can be another way to make your home feel refreshed this fall. Try floating a big piece of furniture by moving it off of a wall, angling a chair or setting up a reading nook with a lamp and a bookshelf.
A great, inexpensive way to access a cozy autumnal feeling is to change your lighting. Rather than relying on harsher overhead lighting, think about using lamps with warm-toned bulbs to give you the autumnal refresh that you may be craving in the days ahead. And don’t forget seasonal or decorative light choices such as string lights or candles.
Lastly, autumn is a great time of year to decorate with nature. Fill trays or bowls with apples, pears, pine cones, pomegranates, or small pumpkins or squashes in order to achieve a look that is both seasonal and functional. You can also add small pine cones or acorns to candle jars to get a natural look, or you could clip eucalyptus or other greenery or branches from outdoors to bring inside for a fresh look.
Whatever you decide, there are many ways to simply revamp your home in a short amount of time (and without spending money). Enjoy your living space this autumn, and be sure to appreciate the moments with friends and family at home.
