A Sangamon County sheriff’s deputy recently acquitted on charges of stealing plants from a Sherman park is suspected of shoplifting.
Sangamon County state’s attorney John Milhiser said that he has a Springfield police report on the April 24 incident involving deputy Sherry Waldron but has not made a charging decision. He declined further comment.
Authorities said she was caught putting grocery items in her purse and attempting to leave the Schnucks on Sangamon Avenue. She was not arrested after calling a friend, Brenda Campbell, who is a retired Sangamon County sheriff’s sergeant. After Campbell arrived on the scene and spoke with store employees, the store told police they would not prosecute.
Waldron was acquitted of misdemeanor theft charges in February after she was captured on videotape last year loading potted plants into her sheriff’s vehicle.
