NAUGHTY NOW NICE
Springfield gets a reminder of the value of free
expression next week with a reading of great American literature that was
once suppressed or challenged. The fifth annual “Banned-Book
Reading” at Lincoln Land Community College will include readings by
students and faculty from
To Kill a
Mockingbird
, The
Catcher in the Rye
, Lolita, and other classics. The
event, which will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, in the LLCC
library, is sponsored by the college’s English and Humanities
Department and kicks off the college’s 2005-06 Humanities Series.

LOVE YOUR MOTHER
The theme for this year’s Mother Jones Dinner,
the 20th annual commemoration of the life of union organizer Mary Harris
“Mother” Jones, is progressive politics, and the featured
speaker is John Nichols, a progressive political writer. Nichols, who
writes for
The Nation, is the author of Dick: The Man Who
Is President
and editor of Against the Beast: An Anti-Imperialist Reader. “Bush fighter,” his profile of U.S. Sen. Dick
Durbin, was published in the Feb. 3 edition of
Illinois Times. For tickets to the
dinner, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, at UIS, call Mettie Funk at
217-652-0481 or Terry Reed at 217-523-3722.

WHERE THE DOCS ARE
The Southern Illinois University School of Medicine
hosts its annual fair for physician recruiters this week, giving the
state’s rural communities an opportunity to hire medical students and
residents. The school has been hosting the Doctors Fair since 1979 as part
of its mandate to help the state meet the need for physicians. The event
will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, north of the
school’s main building at 801 N. Rutledge St.

SMOKE-FILLED ROOMS
Mayor Tim Davlin has scheduled two public hearings on
a proposed city smoking ban. Springfield and other cities with home-rule
powers have the authority to restrict smoking in public places, including
restaurants and bars, under recent state legislation. The hearings will be
held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, and 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27. A
location for the first meeting has not been announced; the second will be
held in the City Council chambers.
