REMEMBERING 9/11

Lincoln Library, Springfield’s Public Library, is planning a day of
remembrance on Saturday, Sept. 11. On that day, at 5 p.m., local poets are invited
to come to the library at 326 S. Seventh St., to read their poems in the spirit
of the day, or to read from someone else’s poetry. A chapbook will be prepared
for the program. To include a poem in the book, e-mail it for consideration
to Corrine Frisch at cfrisch@illinoistimes.com

TEACHER UNCLE PETE

Remember Pete Seeger, the banjo-picking, folk-song-singing, black-balled,
union-supporting all-American, who chastised Bob Dylan for betraying folk music
and chided Woody Guthrie for his poor hygiene?

Ty Brando, a DJ on WQNA (FM 88.3), wrote a letter to the 85-year-old rabble-rouser
requesting a radio interview. Lo and behold, Mr. Seeger called one day ready
to talk. Brando, who is in his fifth year as a DJ on the volunteer community
station, has also interviewed Gordon Lightfoot, Willie Nelson, Peter Yarrow,
Arlo Guthrie, Doc Watson, and Judy Collins during his tenure as host of “Ty
Tunes.”

The Seeger interview is scheduled to air tonight (Thursday, Aug. 26) at 6:30.

NADER ON THE ROPES

Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader’s attempts to appear
on the Illinois ballot in November suffered a one-two punch last week.

On Thursday, the Illinois State Board of Elections ruled that Nader’s nominating
petitions fell short of the state-required 25,000 valid signatures. Then on
Monday, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit Nader filed against the state that
charged Illinois election laws as overly burdensome for third-party candidates
[Todd Spivak, “Nader’s challenge,” Aug. 5]. The Nader campaign plans an appeal.
