NEW HISTORIC AREA
On Tuesday, new Springfield historical markers began appearing west
of the Capitol, designating the new Pasfield House Historic Area.
The Pasfield House, part of a 40-acre estate that once was the city’s largest,
served as the residence for three generations of George Pasfields after its
purchase in 1841. The new designation encompasses an area within the boundaries
of Capitol Avenue, Pasfield and New streets, as well as properties on both sides
of Edwards Street.
The Georgian-Revival mansion, built in 1896, was recently renovated, and is
used as reception and meeting facility, as well as a temporary residence for
lobbyists and legislators.
Owner Tony Leone says the historic designation is a fitting tribute to a family
that made Springfield a better place. “Shouldn’t we all try to collectively
make Springfield a better place to be?”
NEW HISTORIC SHOP
The Illinois State Historical Society has opened a part-time shop in the former
