TALK ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL ART
Dr. Judith Everson, retired UIS professor, will
discuss the work of Scottish environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy at a
brown-bag lunch at noon on Friday, April 22, at the Springfield Art
Association. The presentation, which coincides with Earth Day, examines
Goldworthy’s use of natural materials in his short-lived creations
and permanent installations. Goldworthy was the subject of the
award-winning 2003 documentary River and Tides. Everson’s presentation will be held in SAA’s
Michael Victor II Art Library. The association is located at 700 N. Fourth
St.
SHERFFIUS BAGS ANOTHER HONOR
John Sherffius is the winner of the Society of
Professional Journalists’ 2004 Sigma Delta Chi Award for editorial
cartooning. Sherffius, former editorial cartoonist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, was
honored for his cartoons in Illinois Times and two other publications. The award will be presented
July 8 during the annual Sigma Delta Chi banquet at the National Press Club
in Washington, D.C. Sherffius, whose work began running in Illinois Times in July
2004, recently was named cartoonist of the year by the National Press
Foundation.
FIRST IN ITS CLASS
Illinois Times won two
awards in the Illinois Press Association’s annual Newspaper
Advertising Contest. The paper won a first-place award for best classified
advertising section. Capital City Visitor, the annual visitor’s guide published by Illinois Times, won the
first-place award for best niche publication. Illinois
Times competed against newspapers with a
circulation of 8,000 to 30,000. The awards were announced at the
IPA’s advertising and marketing convention earlier this month in East
Peoria.
THE REAL DEAL
Karen Lynne Deal, music director and conductor of the
Illinois Symphony Orchestra, presents a concert preview at 11:45 a.m.
Tuesday, April 26, at the Illini Country Club. Her presentation, titled
“The Creative Process,” will offer details about featured
composers and insider tidbits about upcoming symphony concerts. The
luncheon is open to nonmembers of the country club. The price is $12 per
