BROWN DECISION COMMEMORATED
A group working to recruit minority teachers for the Springfield and Decatur
school systems plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the landmark
Brown v. Board of Education ruling at an event on Sunday at UIS.
Project Minority Student Support for Teaching will present a skit, written
by project director Loretta Meeks, based on the events leading up to Brown.
The U.S. Supreme Court decision, issued on May 17, 1954, barred school segregation
based on race. A panel discussion of attorneys representing the Black Attorneys’
Organization follows the skit.
The free event will be held from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, March 7, in Brookens
Auditorium in the lower level of Brookens Library on the UIS campus.
