HOMETOWN HUMANITIES HEROES

Springfield standouts Karen Lynne Deal and Carl Volkmann are recipients
of this year’s 2004 Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award. Announced last week
by Illinois Humanities Council, the award recognizes people who champion the
appreciation of regional history, music, literature, and the arts.

As conductor of Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Deal has led the development
of a music education program for children. Volkmann, former director of Lincoln
Library, has volunteered on many local boards, including Dana-Thomas House Foundation
and Sangamon County Historical Society.

Mayor Tim Davlin nominated the pair, who are among six dozen “Humanities Heroes”
winners from across the state. “The city of Springfield is greatly enriched
by the contributions these two individuals have made,” said Davlin in a statement.

HELLO, MR. PULITZER!

Bob Cavanagh of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library hit the big
time when he started penning the regular “History Talk” column in Illinois
Times. But Cavanagh recently scored another major publication credit.

On Wednesday, Sept. 29, Cavanagh’s haiku poem on the subject of “ghosts” was
published by USAToday.com. Here’s his work, in its entirety:
