Marshalls,
the nationwide chain of discount department stores, is coming to Springfield.
The
store will be built at Sherwood Plaza near the intersection of Wabash Avenue
and Veterans Parkway, said Ward 7 Joe McMenamin, whose ward includes the site. The
store will be next to Burlington, which moved from the Town and Country shopping
center on MacArthur Boulevard to Sherwood Plaza earlier this year. Construction
is expected to begin in the fall or early winter with an opening planned for
late spring of next year.
“It’s
good news,” McMenamin said.
With
arrival of Marshalls, four of five vacancies at Sherwood Plaza will be filled,
McMenamin said. Besides Burlington, the other businesses include Outback
Steakhouse and Core Life Eatery, a restaurant that focuses on healthy food.
Marshalls
parent company also owns TJ Maxx, which has an outlet on Veterans Parkway near
Sherwood Plaza. Like Marshalls, TJ Maxx sells apparel and other items at discount prices. McMenamin said the arrival of Marshalls will add to a concentration
of apparel stores in the area that will help take the sting from closures of
Sears and Bergner’s at White Oaks Mall. Shoppers who don’t want to buy clothes
sight unseen from the internet will be able to easily travel between stores, he
said.
“It
becomes a destination for apparel,” the alderman said.
Officials with Seritage Growth Properties, owner of Sherwood Plaza, could not be immediately reached for comment. A spokeswoman for TJX Companies, parent company of Marshalls, would not comment, saying that it is company policy not to announce the opening of stores until two weeks or so before opening day.
