When you have a career as remarkable as the one Frank
McNeil has had in his 20 years on the City Council — from his
participation in the voting-rights lawsuit that established
Springfield’s aldermanic system of government to creating a
police-review board and being the city’s conscience —
somebody’s bound to throw you a party. On Tuesday, May 29, friends will honor McNeil, who
stepped aside as the alderman of Ward 2 earlier this month, with a
reception at Secret Recipes Reception Center, 3086 Normandy Rd. “Frank is one of Springfield’s finest
who’s come out in the forefront to make a difference,” says
Angela Harris, one of the event’s organizers. Harris says a group of grassroots community members
just wanted to show McNeil their appreciation for his lifetime of public
service. A 5:30 cocktail reception, open to the public, will
be followed by a dinner program. Tickets for the dinner cost $20 and must
be purchased in advance; no jeans are allowed. Several civic, social, and
Greek-letter organizations from around the state, as well as local churches
and elected leaders, have been invited to participate. For tickets or more information, contact Angela at
