Summer Beck-Griffith was told the mayor wants to take the Lincoln Library in a different direction when she was notified of her firing earlier this month.
But in the wake of her dismissal, by newly elected Mayor Misty Buscher, Beck-Griffith remains perplexed as to just what that “new direction” might be for the capital city’s 167-year-old public library.
Beck-Griffith says she repeatedly sought unsuccessfully to meet with Buscher before being terminated.
City spokeswoman Haley Wilson issued this statement: “After careful thought and consideration, Mayor Misty Buscher dismissed Summer Beck-Griffith as an appointed employee. Mayor Buscher recently appointed Curtis Mann as the library’s acting director. Mann served as the library’s city historian and also managed the Sangamon Valley Collection. Mann is more than qualified to temporarily fulfill this role until Kathryn Harris assumes her role as interim director for the city’s public library.
“Harris has over four decades of institutional knowledge and expertise that will spearhead the future of the library and provide guidance and direction on forthcoming leadership. We are so very grateful to acquire Kathryn Harris in an interim role as we search for a qualified director for our city’s library.”
Beck-Griffith acknowledged that mayors have the right to pick their own department heads. But she noted the library, for at least the last 50 years, has been immune from leadership changes with the election of new mayors.
“My hope is that Springfield works toward moving in a way that’s congruent with a setup that takes the politics out of ruling the library,” she said.
It’s been a tumultuous time for the library.
Last year, Library Director Rochelle Hartman was fired by then-mayor Jim Langfelder after a little over two years on the job. Langfelder replaced her with Beck-Griffith.
Beck-Griffith was fired after Buscher made comments inferring that the director needed to be a librarian to be eligible for some grants. But those comments were disputed by more than 30 library employees who signed a letter to the public saying that Beck-Griffith’s skills suited the role well and that grant money would not be affected by her lack of a degree in library science.
Community relations manager Hillary Rains, who passed the petition, was fired as a result of the letter, which was printed on library letterhead.
Gene Mitchell, a staff representative with the labor union representing most library workers, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31, said employees felt coerced into signing the letter because a member of management made the request.
In response, Beck-Griffith said, “The staff has time and time and time again stood up for the future of Lincoln Library and to say anything else really belittles their voice.”
Kathryn Harris, who has worked in local libraries for over 40 years, will assume the role of interim director of the library June 1. In 2015, Harris retired from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library after a career that began at Springfield’s public library in 1971.
Interim department heads can hold a post no longer than three months. Buscher said she will conduct a nationwide search to find a permanent library director.
“Once Kathryn Harris assumes her role as interim director, we will work with her on a comprehensive plan of what the library will look like in the future. We will be relying heavily on her expertise,” Buscher said in a prepared statement to Illinois Times.
Beck-Griffith said she holds Harris in high regard and believes she will be an asset to the library.
“I just want to let people know that I support the staff. The staff is phenomenal, and I’m so proud of the work that they have done,” she added.
But Beck-Griffith added she believes structural reforms are needed at the library. She said the department is largely funded by the city’s telecommunications tax but as the number of landlines in the city has diminished, it has become a less reliable revenue source. She added that property taxes would be a stable source of funding.
Unlike most municipalities, Springfield’s library director doesn’t report to a library board. Instead, the mayor decides who will hold the post. Springfield’s library board functions in an advisory role.
Rains said, “We’d really like to let people know that the idea that (Beck-Griffith’s) credentials could stand in the way of the library’s progress is not true. … Not having a degreed librarian as director has nothing to do with grant qualifications. Many libraries, especially libraries of our size, have directors who worked in things like communications, public administration or nonprofit management.
“I don’t need Summer to catalog a book. She’s never going to think about that. Heck, I can’t catalog a book, and I have a library degree. We need someone in that position to be able to do the things that we can’t do: Communicate with the higher-ups and see the lay of the political land, which, you know, Summer generally is pretty great at.”

“After careful thought and consideration” Mayor Buscher dismissed the director, yet she didn’t even take the time to meet with her to have a conversation about the library, what’s currently going on, or what initiatives this director had planned? Doesn’t sound like much thought or consideration went into it besides the fact she was appointed by the previous administration so she had to go. A sad day for Springfield when we’ve begun to politicize our library and base library leadership decisions on politics instead of results.
Buscher could have had a big “win” with Springfield residents if she could have swallowed her ego and listened to the pleas to keep Summer as the Director. The Library doesn’t need an interim director, it needs proven leadership and that’s what it had.
Additionally – Lying about the grant funding was a weird way to try and fire someone.
It’s too bad the library is losing out on Summer’s leadership because the mayor got her fee-fees hurt by Rains’ letter. Mayor Buscher better expect to have fierce opposition in four years.
The lying and misinformation continues.
From the night of the election results to the day both were fired they claim the new Mayor had no time to speak with them despite being just across the driveway? That’s ridiculous !
Instead both of them took to city social media banning people thatdidn’t agree with them ,using city services stirring up trouble with the union to lobby for their job? THAT alone will get anyone fired as it should regardless of qualification
“Summer” complains about dwindling money to the library, in other words.lack of private funds.
The first thing private money looks at is who is running the library and its so called mission. including any type of board. If it is full of non qualified political hacks starting with the Executive Director.
If so, private money moves on fast without comment. That has happened many times in the past 8 years. There have been four Library Directors come and go under the former Mayor-the most in 50 years! It’s not a community center is a Library!
Paul, if you could read or take the time to listen to a 15 minute interview, you’d know that Summer Griffith asked to speak with Mayor Buscher multiple times. Instead, the Mayor ducked her requests and had the interim HR director fire her via email. Wasn’t this the candidate who just ran on her “leadership” and governmental transparency? Seems ironic considering how she handled this situation… I’ve never heard of a leader firing someone who reports directly to them through email without even having the decency to have a face to face conversation beforehand- despicable.
What’s despicable and absurd when any (Public or Private) employee decides to take to social media ,use the city resources and stir up unnecessary trouble with the Union, (which they still file a grievance over) to lobby for their job or just cause trouble.
That is a sure fire way to get yourself fired,no matter what your qualifications are and rightfully so.
Bottom line is, this and many other jobs serve at the pleasure of the Mayor .As the last person (one of 4 that served during last Mayors 8 years) found out how she was let go.
She never heard from the former Mayor nor was she invited to meetings he had with other library staff that concerned leadership.
Banning people from commenting on the public library social media simply because they don’t agree with you is not good leadership”or governmental transparency as they claimed to be. Time to move on the election is long over.
So being apart of a union takes away your voice when it comes to your job? Pretty sure it’s supposed to do the exact opposite and protect union members’ voices… I agree that it was a mistake to use city resources to do so, but speaking out for the betterment of the library is their right, and the union should be the 1st entity sticking up for them. It’s sad their own union leadership picks sides over politics as well, and they chose to chose politics over the very people they represent. Shame on Gene Mitchell for trying to silence the voice of his members- there’s zero evidence anyone who chose to be apart of that letter was coerced into doing so.
I am not going to speak for the Union but they are the ones that speak for their members -hence why they are a Union YES some of them felt coerced and the union responded accordalily and correctly.
It doesn’t appear there were any changes in wind .The Mayor made the comment they were checking IF the lack of qualified Librarian would affect grants which included private grants
.It was then the two in question decided to take to social media and use city resources . THERE CHOICE! and got fired over it . A very selfish act.
It doesn’t appear the Mayor had any major changes planned due to the fact the interim director is in place followed by another well qualified director that will help in the search for permanent replacement.
Maybe those 2 in question hadn’t committed such a gross violation of rules they may still be there. that’s just a guess because Mayor has not commented on details of personal matter due to legal reasons
Arthur Dunkin, you have made your feelings known about the new mayor in several previous post IT comment section. YOU don’t like the Mayor no matter what she says or do -hardly an objective opinion.
The politics of this is some of you want your way despite rules being broken, gross isbornation committed by the former management of the Library. The rights concerning that are not absolute.
Where were you when the last library directors were push out and fired ? thats was ok because it was the former Mayor ? Time to move on Have a nice day

Firing someone because they arent putting the library in a position to succeed and meet the needs of library goers is completely different than firing someone simply because they were appointed by the previous Mayor. Its the reasoning for the termination that matters. The previous Mayor didnt seem to have a problem letting the public know the reason for his decisions, this Mayor seems to pull random reasons out of a hat and tries to see what will stick. Theres zero proof Springfield has lost out on any grant funding because of the director not having a library degree and that was the reason that triggered the letter being written in support of Summer. Lets not twist facts to fit your narrative..
Not meeting with Summer to discuss the library and what is going on and what is planned is not only a slap in the face to her, but also anyone who enjoys our library and the services they offer to Springfield residents. Whens the last time youve been to the library? Do you know the differences between the 2 Directors? The improvements are like night and day- just stop by and ask the staff what they thought of the job Summer was doing. But wait, their voice doesnt matter anymore because their union claims they were coerced. Laughable Thats why this decision has drawn such criticism, and rightfully so. Public input and results should matter.
And youre right, I didnt vote for this Mayor but I do have a voice dont I? If I remember correctly, you were and still are very critical of Langfelder. Its a part of the job of being an elected official- being accountable to the public. It works both ways and I, like many others in Springfield, appreciate elected officials who are willing to make their OWN decisions.
Last comment should read *without seeking public input before making OWN decision*
Yes, it’s the Mayor’s right to replace the director because she was appointed. However, someone who ran on governmental transparency would be expected to follow through on that promise when they take office!
As long as everyone agrees with you and your hearsay then it’s ok to break rules, not be truthful and limit free speech ?
What’s not transparent? There was no “random” reason for the 2 in question to be let go.If they didn’t know their jobs were dependent on who the Mayor is or didn’t realize no reason has to be given for termination they never should have been there in the first place. Instead they decided to make it all about themselves. Not exactly helping in a positive way .
The Library has been a mess for YEARS! Due to the former Mayor micro-managing and interference, this includes why others came and went.
.When was the last time the Library got any real substantiation grant. endowment of any kind?
Your hero Summer complained about lack of funding
YES they have missed out on private funding, some that could have been leveraged with matching funds.Reason? Due to poor management, lack of any real plan going forward, blocking free speech on city social media, poor spending such as a Bookmobile, turning it into a community center and political hack as an Executive director are not good plans.
Private money went elsewhere.
YES employees were coerced and rightfully brought the matter up to the Union and they acted.Yes actions and results do matter.I believe that why a change was made,
