Graveyards are often beautiful nature preserves. They’re also filled with
history. Three local bone orchards are having programs this fall to educate,
elucidate, and elaborate on the stories behind (or underneath) the headstones.
Cemeteries at Farmer’s Point and Hickory Grove near Petersburg come alive with remembrances of those who have passed on in the “Voices of the Past” Cemetery Tour from 1 to 4 p.m. on September 14. Call 632-3543 for more on the story of the Menard County graveyards.
The home of Abraham Lincoln’s tomb gets into the act with a Tour of Oakridge Cemetery on October 5 from noon to 3 p.m. Interpreters in period costumes recall the pasts of our fair city’s esteemed figures at their gravesites. Need to know more? Call 789-2340.
On October 19, from 1 to 4 p.m., the Rochester Historical Preservation Society sponsors “A Whisper in Time” Cemetery Tour, with volunteer presenters telling tales of the defunct at their final resting places in Mottarville, Oak Hill, and Rochester. Call 793-6389 for details.
