The city of Springfield released its fiscal year 2009
budget to aldermen Tuesday and announced that its first budget hearing will
be held after the meeting of the finance committee on Tuesday, Jan. 15. The proposed budget, totaling $205.6 million, is
referred to by the city as “a no-frills, bare-bones budget.”
Personnel services make up 74 percent of the fiscal year 2009
corporate-fund portion, proposed at $107.7 million. Because of increasing employee pension and fringe
costs, the city also proposes the use of $8.4 million of its fund balance
to meet obligations, reducing the estimated fund by 50 percent.
