Rockford wants WUIS
To the editor:
I am dismayed to learn that some public radio affiliates in Illinois will no longer broadcast the highly acclaimed State Week in Review. Airing weekly from the University of Illinois at Springfield, this panel discussion is an insightful and entertaining look at current topics in Illinois politics and the inner-workings of the Illinois legislature. At a time when our state faces record budget deficits and a high-profile public corruption trial–not to mention a historic change in administration–this is a critical loss that does not foster an informed citizenry.
Northern Illinois is often “out of the loop” when it comes to getting information about Springfield and vice versa. While living in Springfield, I was astonished to discover that the Illinois State Library did not even catalog the Rockford Register Star, while other smaller city newspapers were represented. Thankfully, after I and other patrons complained, the state’s second-largest city’s newspaper was finally added to the stacks. Perhaps this complaint will cause Illinois public radio affiliates to reconsider this deleterious programming change. Our public radio station and public broadcasting monies should support the public’s thoughtful consideration of critical and topical issues by airing this timely and informative program.

Peoria wants respect
I commend the Illinois Times for the excellent article published in last week’s paper [“The War at Home,” April 10]. The piece captured the essence of many people whom I know here and throughout the USA. I thank you for spending the effort to capture and print it. Too bad the politicians of both major political parties don’t get it.

Springfield wants a martini
Dear Penny Zimmerman-Wills,
I thought it was great that you mentioned all the new places that have jumped on the martini-craze bandwagon [“Make mine a martini,” March 20]. But sometimes we forget those who pioneered the way for the new. Scott Wright, the bartender at Maldaner’s, is a Springfield legend. His ability to not only make a great mixed drink but a perfect martini–and probably the best Manhattan in town–always brings his loyal following back for more. We are sorry you forget to mention Scott, but we are glad he is always there for us.
