From coast to coast, the journalism landscape long has been marked by turmoil. Most recently, Alden Global Capital – boo, hiss! – a hedge fund notorious for gutting papers such as the Denver Post so that they become a shadow of such papers as the State Journal-Register, is seeking control of Tribune Publishing Co., owner of the Chicago Tribune, the Baltimore Sun and a few others once or still proud newspapers, where scribes are terrified. A hotel owner has put together a competing offer to Tribune shareholders aimed at making everything good, or, at least, better, for readers. We’re not sure how that might turn out. Experts at not making money in the news game are scheduled to convene at 6 p.m. on April 28 for a virtual panel discussion on nonprofit journalism, put together by the public affairs reporting program at University of Illinois Springfield, that will feature folks including Dawn Rhodes, senior editor with Block Club Chicago, a nonprofit that’s broken such stories as vaccines intended for the poor diverted to Eric Trump and his neighbors, as well Jeff Rogers, editor of Capitol News Illinois, which has made state government news affordable for papers everywhere.
