In my recent column titled “An
overdue policy on the library,” I quoted from a very interesting
article about the history of Illinois’ history library, Roger D. Bridges’ “The Origins and Early Years of the Illinois State
Historical Society” (Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society,
Vol. 68, No. 2 (Apr., 1975), pp. 98-120).
That article can, of course, be read
at what is now the Abraham
Lincoln Presidential Library on Sixth Street in downtown Springfield. Or
you can read it online by becoming a member of the Illinois State Historical Society. In addition to a subscription to current issues of the JISHS, individual, student and family memberships come with access to the electronic archives, JSTOR, where reside back issues of the journal.
Money well spent.
